In Saxon times power and status was displayed through the arts. Early English and Germanic art shows craftsmen skilled in enamel and coloured glass and carved gold ornaments. This eagle was part of the decoration of a shield that was found in a ship burial at Sutton Hoo, dating from the early 7th century.
