A new research project was carried out in the 1980's to find out how large the burial area was, what sort of people were buried there amongst other things. In mound 17, they found a rich intact grave burial of a warrior and his horse. They also found that in the Christian period, the ground became a place of execution. All that were left of the victims were 'sand bodies'.
