This map shows the locations of the Anglo-Saxon burial mounds at Sutton Hoo. There were two great ship burials at the site as well as other burials of people and cremations. In the time of King Henry VIII and again in the 19th century some of the mounds had been opened but no records left of the excavations. However during excavations in the 20th century two of the graves - labelled number 1 (a ship burial) and mound number 17 (a burial of a warrior and his horse), still had their grave goods intact. From these archaeologists have learned a great deal.
