In the 1980's, archaeologists at Sutton Hoo discovered the graves of victims of violent death. Some were beheaded and some had broken necks. They were buried in grotesque positions. They died between the 7th and 12th centuries. It seems during the Christian period the ancient burial site became a place for execution. The outline of their bodies had been preserved in the sand. Some were buried near post holes suggesting a gallows may have been at the site.
