An evergreen plant with shiny leathery leaves, 5-8cm. It produces upright flowers in racemes 5-12cm long. The individual flower petal are small white and about 4mm long. The berries ripen in late summer changing from green to red then black. It was introduced from SE Europe and is now widespread in gardens, parks but also, as pictured here, in roadside ditches.
