A plant with yellow flowers (black dotted at the edges) and stemless leaves (30-90cm tall) that is common in grassland, hedgebanks and open woodland It flowers June to September. The plant was once thought to drive away devils and evil spirits and in Medieval times was hung in windows to prevent Satan entering the house. It was also thought to cure wounds and its name comes from the crusaders of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem who used it to heal their wounds. Picture taken 6th July at Old Warden, Bedfordshire.
