An upright unbranched plant, with yellow five notched flowers in a spike. It can grow up to 24 inches and flowers June to August. The grooved fruit has hooked spines that catch on animal fur and ensure the plant is spread over a distance. It is common on field margins, road verges and by hedgerows. The plant was once believed to be associated with magic and it was also used as a remedy against everything from snake bite to failing eyesight, loss of memory and liver complaints. Picture taken 6th July at Old Warden, Bedfordshire.
