A complex part of the building the Byward tower and Postern date from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The turret contains ealry gun-embrasures for defence and was originally reached via a drawbridge over a moat. The castle has been constantly improved and extended by the addition of other smaller towers, extra buildings, walls and walkways, gradually evolving into the building seen today.
