These ruins are the remian of the palace of the Bishops of Winchester, one of the largest and most important buildings in Medieval London, founded in the 12th century by Henry de Blois, brother to King Stephen. The main hall would have been lavishly decorated. The site also contained a prison, brew-house and a butchery.
