This picture taken from the south bank of the Thames is looking towards the eastern edge of the City of London. The skyline is dominated by the Swiss Re Tower 30 St Mary Axe, known as the Gherkin. Its innovative design, both in terms of its appearance and eco-friendly services - the design maximises daylight and natural ventilation so that it uses half the energy typically required by an office block can be seen firm many places over London. The exterior, finished in 2004 it became an instant icon. It was designed by architectural firm Foster and Partners.
