This plant has a spiny winged hairy stem and grows to 30-150 cm. It branches above the leaves. The dark green almost purple-flushed leaves are deeply pinnate, wavy and spiny. The flower heads are in crowded clusters, the outer bracts are purplish and the flowers dark red-purple. It flowers in marshes, damp grasslands and open woodland. Picture taken on 8th July at woods near Old Warden, Bedfordshire.
