Wild carrot has small white flowers with petals that are often uneven in size. The central flower is often purplish-red. The fruiting head is concave and the fruits have long spines that attach themselves to passing animals. It is an upright plant with stiff hairs and ridged or lined stems. It has very divided leaves. The much divided bracts under the flower heads also make it distinctive. It flowers from June to August. It is the ancestor of the garden carrot and was once throught to cure epilepsy and stitch. It grows in fields and grassy places throughout Britain. Picture taken 26th July 2006 at Stevington, Bedfordshire.
