A very distinctive fungus with a tall egg-shaped or elongated cap when young covered in shaggy white scales. It is also known as Lawyer's wig. A narrow wing around the middle of the stem elongates as the fungi matures lifting the cap upwards. The cap and white gills gradually blacked and eventaully disolve releasing the spores until only the stem remains. It is found in small troops in grassy areas, espeically where the soil has been disturbed. It can be found summer to late autumn. Picture taken October 19th near Odell, Bedfordshire.
