This fungus produces spores in the upper part of its fruit body and relies on rain to disperse them. When a rain drop falls on the fungus, the spores puff out through an opening in the top. It has a white/cream colour and the young fungus is covered with tiny whitish spines which fall off with age leaving behind a net pattern of scars. It is abundant in conifer or broadleaf woods and fruits summer to late autumn. Picture taken October 2006 at Maulden woods, Bedfordshire.
