The very young fruit bodies have spines but these are shed to leave a smooth surface. This species always grows on rotting wood and at its base is a root like strand. It is usually found in very large clusters. It is a very common fungus and fruits from summer to winter. Picture taken October 26th at Maulden Woods, Bedfordshire.
