The cenotaph in Whitehall, London is probably one of the best known in the world. It was constructed between 1919-1920 by Sir Edwin Lutyens replacing a wooden one erected for the victory parade following WWI. It is a Grade I listed building. It has a carved wreath on each end and the words "The Glorious Dead", chosen by Rudyard Kipling. On the sides are the flags of the Royal Navy, the British Army, the Royal Air Force and the Merchant Navy. The Cenotaph is the site of the annual service of remembrance held at 11 a.m. on the closest Sunday to the 11th November (Armistice Day). Picture taken 16th December 2006.
