The column commemorates Admiral Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It was built between 1840 and 1843. The statue of Nelson faces south towards whitehall and is 5.5m high it stands on top of a 46m high granite column. The square pedestal of the column is decorated with four bronze panels, cast from captured French guns, depicting the four great victories of Nelson. It was designed by William Railton. E.H. Baily sculptured the statue. The four bronze panels around the pedestal were made by Musgrave Watson, John Ternouth, John Carew, William Woodington.
