Trafalgar Square is in central London. It commemorates the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, a British naval victory during the Napoleonic Wars. Towards the southern end of the Square was the original Charing Cross, where the Strand from the City met Whitehall, considered to be the centre of London. In the 1820s the Prince Regent engaged John Nash a landscape architect to redevelop the area. The area was redesigned again by Sir Charles Barry around 1845. Nelson's Column is situated in the Square, which is a popular site for both celebrations and demonstrations.
