This art gallery, located on the north side of Trafalgar Square, houses Western European paintings from 1250 to 1900 Entry to the main collection is free as it is owned by the British public. The National Gallery was founded in 1824 and covers a broad scope of art history from the Early Renaissance to the Post-impressionists The present building on Trafalgar Square is the third to house the National Gallery. The fa�ade is by William Wilkins, and is the only part of his original building of 1832�8 that remains essentially unchanged the rest had been much altered and extended.
