Piccadilly Circus was built in 1819 to connect Regent Street and Piccadilly in the City of Westminster. The name Circus comes from the circular open space at the street junction. Near to many London theatres, shopping and entertainment areas it is a busy meeting point and a tourist attraction in its own right, know for its video displays and neon signs. It is also famous for the Shaftsbury fountain and statue known as 'Eros'(although he is intended to be Eros' twin Anteros) at the south-western side of the Circus. Erected in 1892-1893 at the centre of Piccadilly Circus to commemorate the philanthropic works of Lord Shaftesbury it was later moved to its current location.
