During the war, hundreds of children were evacuated from large populated areas like London to places around Hertfordshire. Hatfield and Welwyn (both much smaller villages back then) provided many safe houses for children to escape the 'Blitz' in London. For a more detailed look into one evacuee's story please return to the Mill Green Mill & Museum page and select Reg Coleman's Story.
It is important to remember that not only children were evacuated to rural locations during the war. The area of Hatfield and Welwyn also provided hostelling to Jewish people who were fleeing persecution from the Nazis during and after 'Kristallnacht'.
The kindness of the residents of Welwyn and Hatfield is commemorated by some of the Jewish imigrants in the Reiss Memorial Garden, which can be found next to the Parkway in Welwyn Garden City.
