You can pour a liquid with bits in it through a sieve to strain the bits out. Perhaps you boiled an onion in milk to get flavour in the milk, then you want to throw away the onion. If your thickened sauce has lumps in it, you can rescue it by pushing it through a sieve with a wooden sauce to get rid of the lumps.
