These are the pigs used for breeding at Farrowby Farm in Hertfordshire. The adult males are known as ‘boars’ and the female pigs ‘sows’. Bertie - the large male boar in the centre of the group is a ‘Large White’ in breed. All of the other pigs in the pen are females or ‘sows’. The three black and white sows are ‘Saddlebacks’. The pink coloured sows are mostly two-way crosses (this means they have parents of different breeds). The pink sows in the photograph are a cross between a breed known as ‘Large White’ mixed with one of the following breeds ‘British Lop’, ‘Saddleback’, ‘Gloucestershire’ or Berkshire. The Ginger pig is a three way cross. The reason for crossing the pigs is to produce the best meat.
