Kimberley Star 1899-1900, silver (hallmarks for Birmingham 1900), reverse engraved 'I. Fawkes K.T.G.', with integral top rib-and bar. This medal is entirely as issued, except for the details that have been additionally engraved on the reverse – i.e. ‘I. Fawkes K.T.G.’. This engraved detail probably suggests that I. Fawkes was a member of the Kimberly Town Guard (K.T.G.).
The town of Kimberley was laid siege to during the second South African war. Field forces attempting to come to the town’s relief were defeated in several open battles by Boer forces, but eventually Kimberley relieved in February 1900. The town’s mayor, H. A. Oliver, decided to show the town's gratitude to the surviving defenders by issuing this star., which bears the Kimberley town arms and motto in a circle containing the inscription, on a six-pointed star with a ball at each point It is not an official award and could not be worn in uniform; the official award was a bar to the Queen's South Africa Medal.
