Harriet Cole and Maud Butcher were both servants at Oaklands House. Harriet and Maud were both between maids. They cleaned the upstairs and downstairs of the house and had to be up very early every morning and help the senior servants with their jobs. Between maids were often very young; it was their first job. Maud worked at the house from 1907 - 1909. She was 16 years old when she started and earned £6 a year. She thought that the wages were good and she had all her meals provided for her - which she described as 'good and plentiful'.
