In 1670 construction began of the Hockerill bypass to take traffic away from the congested town centre. The drinking fountain seen in the old picture of the Hockerill Crossroads was donated by Etra and Elisa Eyre in 1896. It became a traffic hazard with the advent of motor cars and was moved to the Castle Gardens in the 1920s
