The text of the card reads:

"Of your charity, remember in your
prayers an honourable young man,
Mr Johann Thaler
Son of the headteacher of Würding,
Office Assistant in the Imperial Office
for Highways and Waterways in Simbach,
who met his death, as a hero for the Fatherland, as a volunteer and Lance-Corporal, in the Battle of the Somme
on 26th September 1916, at the age of 19½ years after two years of active service.

May he rest in Peace
Honour his memory

Jesus, Mary and Joseph! (7 Years and 7 quarantines’ Indulgence) Pius X, 16. VI 1906

You are asked to dedicate this indulgence to the dear departed.
Obtainable from J. Leeb, Würding"

The poem below the image reads:
"You sleep in foreign soil
Brought to your rest by a foreign hand:
Oh, so bitter is our pain!
And yet our eyes turn heavenwards,
Where now you dwell in eternal bliss,
Adorned with a hero’s crown.
For those who die for hearth and homeland
Inherit a crown as their reward from the Lord. "
