In the first months of World War 1 the Home Office in Whitehall issued restriction orders to be placed on German subjects living in Britain. Any German who had undergone military training was to be taken as a prisoner of war. In November 1914 all Turkish nationals in Britain were declared enemy aliens except those born in Cyprus.
