Between 1830s and 1850s hundreds of thousands of Irish families fled famine and poverty to start new lives in Britain, America and other parts of the Empire. If they fell on hard times in Britain under the New Poor Law, they were liable to removal back to Ireland. Despite the fact that Cornelius Mahony and his wife Eleanor had left County Cork in Ireland 37 years ago, the parish of Leyton refused to support them. It is likely they were removed back to Ireland. Cornelius could not sign his name.
