In June 1948 the SS Empire Windrush brought the first 492 Jamaican immigrants to Tilbury Docks. Many West Indians who came to Britain had served in the British forces in World War 2. British employers such as London Transport and the British Hotels and Restaurant Association set up recruitment offices in the West Indies and assisted migrants with loans for fares. West Indians started arriving in greater numbers in 1950s.
