This birds-eye view drawing of houses, streets, gardens and synagogue or scola has been reconstructed from deeds dating 1240-1290. The Jewish Town was near the castle and marketplace.
The plan shows names of occupants, dates, place of origin, even occupation when known. Jewish people needed to live close together for worship and safety. Jewish settlement in Norwich probably dates from c1135. In July 1290 Edward 1 ordered all Jews to leave England by 1 November unless they had converted to Christianity.
