This photograph is from a lantern slide. It shows a thatched house in Fen Drayton, Cambridgeshire. There is an inscription in Dutch above the front door "Niet Zonder Arbyt" - "Nothing achieved without labour" 1713. Villages near Huntindon and Ely such as Fen Stanton and Fen Drayton became centres for drainage works which employed c10,000 men at busiest times. Legend has it that Vermuyden stayed at Fen Drayton in this house while working on the draining of the Fens.
