The town was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC and was later a Punic and Roman city. In the 13th century it was conquered by Catalans and became part of the Crown of Aragon. During the 16th century it was fortified with walls and bastions. In 1999 Dalt Vila (Ibiza Old Town) was declared a World heritage site by Unesco.
