The name 'Wyndhell' first appeared in documents of the 13th and 14th century and is likely to have been called as such because of the hill's lofty and exposed position above the town. One of the most important buildings in Windhill is St Michael's Church and it is more than likely that a priest, as well as a church built of timber and thatch dedicated to St Michael, was in place here by the 7th century.
