The route of the river used to run next to the cottage, which now forms part of Coopers of Stortford. The road running to Waitrose bears testament to this being called Old River Lane. Water running through this section of the river was funnelled through a channel beneath Bridge Street to power the towns mill, situated where Jackson Square is located now.
