During and after World War 2 many squadrons of the United States Army Air Force were based at airfields throughout the East of England. US forces are still based at Mildenhall in Suffolk. This 1944 photograph shows the crew of the Marauder 'By Golly' based at Rivenhall in Essex, the headquarters of the 397th Squadron. After the war some US airmen stayed in Britain; some married British wives who accompanied them back to America.
