During and after World War 2 many squadrons of the United States Army Air Force were based at airfields throughout the East of England. US forces are still based at Mildenhall in Suffolk. This photograph shows the cinema in 1975, originally the gymnasium, at the former US airbase at Rivenhall in Essex, the headquarters of the 397th Squadron. After the war this base was used to house some of the 100,000 Polish Army personnel and their families who could not return home to a newly communist Poland.
