In 1972 the President of Uganda, Idi Amin, expelled the Asian community from Uganda. These Asians were descendants of traders and contract workers who had emigrated from India to Africa. Ugandan Asians with British passports had little choice but to come to Britain. Some were housed in the former RAF airbase at Stradishall near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. They arrived at Stansted airport at the beginning of winter and many remained at the Stradishall Resettlement Camp until they found employment and housing elsewhere. Those still at
Stradishall in 1973 were then moved to other camps in Lincolnshire and Warwickshire.
