In 1972 the President of Uganda, Idi Amin, expelled the Asian community from Uganda. Ugandan Asians with British passports had little choice but to come to Britain. The former RAF airbase at Stradishall near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk was the largest of 16 camps in Britain. They arrived at Stansted airport from September 1972 and many remained at the Stradishall Camp until they found employment and housing elsewhere. Those still at Stradishall in March 1973 were moved to other camps in Lincolnshire and Warwickshire when Stradishall closed.
