ocelin was a Benedictine monk at the abbey of St Edmund's. He came from Brakelond, the old northern quarter of the town of Bury St Edmunds. By the time Jocelin became a novice about 1173, the abbey was deeply in debt, partly from mismanagement and from borrowing to rebuild after a disastrous fire. Much of the borrowing was from Jews who became increasingly unpopular in the town. As cellarer Jocelin was an important official, keeping the abbey supplied with food and drink and managing its income, the farm and lands. Between 1197-8 and 1201-2 he wrote a chronicle in Latin about life in the abbey and in the town.
