The Saracens Head Hotel, which can still be seen on Chelmsford's High Street, was taken over by the American Red Cross and used as a hostel for American servicemen from February 1943. The premises was known as the 'American Club'. It provided accomodation for 30 men and the dining hall and kitchen provided about 300 meals per day.
