Elizabeth Conwallis, born 1641, married John Risby, later High Sheriff of Suffolk, in 1661. They lived at Thorpe Morieux Hall near Bury St Edmunds. Who painted the portrait is unknown, probably an immigrant Dutch or Flemish artist c1670. Elizabeth Risby is shown here with her daughter Elizabeth and a servant who may be Native American or of mixed race. Elizabeth had important family connections in the American colonies- one of her relatives was Governor of Massachusetts - and this servant may have been born there.
