On Tuesday 20 August 1940 a lone Luftwaffe aircraft dropped nine bombs in the Navigation Rd area of Chelmsford, according to the Essex Chronicle. The target was assumed to be the Gas Works, although most of the bombs fell on residential areas.
There was one death of a 73 year old lady at Brockley Rd.
One of the bombs fell between the Saracens Head Hotel and the River Chelmer causing a crater. The manager, Mr Porter, charged the public a shilling each to view the site. This raised £100 which was later donated to the 'Flight of Fighters Fund'.
