These handcuffs were found in the foundations of the dungeons near the River Stort. Reported to be from 1553-1558 when Edmund Bonner was the Bishop of London, and therefore owned Bishop’s Stortford. He was zealous in his persecution of Protestants and is famous for burning many of them. It is possible therefore that they were used to hold a convicted Protestant.
