This is the baptism register from the parish of Doddingtonm Cambridgeshire in 1797. It records the baptism on 9 April of Solah, the daughter of Edward and Rose Hern, 'Egyptians'. The term gypsy was a shortened version of Egyptian, the name given by British people to 'foreign travellers' in caravans who started to appear around 1480. The earliest written reference to their presence dates from 1514 and the first anti-gypsy law was passed in 1530 when they were ordered to leave the country.
