The Aliens Restriction Act was rushed through Parliament the day after war was declared in 1914. By the end of August 4300 non-naturalised Germans of military age had been detained. This is a claim dated 30 June 1917 in respect of grants to the British-born wives and children of two interned German men, enemy Aliens, during World War 1. The grants were paid when the women were living in the parish of Cambridge. Carl Otto Wust was interned in Alexandra Palace, London and Joseph Riegler on the Isle of Man at the time. Note how long the men had been interned.
