This tree is slightly larger than Black poplar, which is now rare. It has no bosses on its trunk and has a neater crown with upward growing branches. It is a hybrid between Black poplar (Populus nigra) and the American poplar (Populus deltoides). It has deep furrowed bark and produces bright red male catkins in late March and April. It has been widely planted for timber. Picture taken 19th March 2009 between Ampthill and Bedford.
