This device pressed the clothes flat. Small items were folded inside larger ones and then put inside a linen 'mangling cloth'. They were then wrapped around a wooden roller and two loaded rollers were put in place and the box weighted with stones was wound back and forth over the rollers. A third roller was being prepared whilst the first two were in use. It was usual for a man servant to operate the box press. The final finish might take two days. With thanks to 'The Georgian House Museum', 7 Great George Street, Bristol, BS1 5RR.
