DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is a synthetic pesticide that was once widely used in agriculture. In the second half of World War II, it was used with great effect among very effectively amongst civilian and military populations to control malaria and lice transmitting typhus. Later problems began to emerge with the decline of certain birds, In her book ‘Silent Spring’ Rachael Carson suggested that DDT and other pesticides may cause cancer and that their agricultural use was a threat to wildlife, particularly birds. Its publication was one of the signature events in the birth of the environmental movement. Eventually DDT was for agricultural worldwide under the Stockholm Convention.
