The bombe was a code breaking machine. It is not a computer and does not carryout numerical calculations. It is a complex electrical circuit that is used to carryout a systematic search (using basic logical principals) of those combinations of enigma wheel orders and starting positions that generate the correct pattern of letter pairings from the crib where the corresponding required plug-board connections are logically consistent with one another. hen such a combination is detected by the machine the machine will automatically stop.
